Winter Snowstorm, Part One

A couple days ago, we had several inches of heavy, wet snow where I live. I hadn’t planned on going out to make any images, but my 18 year old daughter wanted to go out in the snow, so we grabbed a couple umbrellas and a camera and headed into the whiteout.

The snow was coming down so heavily at first that it was hard to focus the camera on any distant trees; there was just too much snow in the foreground. But as the snow subsided a little it became a little easier to see the forest for the trees, so to speak.

I loved the way the images are almost monochromatic, sometimes punctuated with a bit of color from some remaining oak leaves, or the pale yellow of the reeds. Unusual for me, I went out without a tripod and shot all the images handheld with one telephoto lens. More snow is in the forecast for tomorrow and I plan to bring a tripod this time and really spend some time photographing some of the winter beauty.
