Trees, Series III- Circumambulations

Circumambulation (noun)- to walk around something

I've photographed thousands of trees, but I'm always looking for new ways to photograph them. And the more I photograph them, the more I want my images to be different from anything I've done before, and different from what anyone else is doing. I'm moving away from literal photos of trees to photo-impressionistic images that distill the trees down to just the colors and shapes that give them their essence.

All the images were created in-camera first, and some were made by using multiple exposures (up to fifty photos in one image) to give the final image its impressionistic, layered look– a technique I've been experimenting with for almost ten years. And– at least when I started doing it– no-one else was using this “secret” technique. Although the computer is used to piece together the final image, no ‘filters’ are used, and each image is assembled manually, and not by simply clicking a button or action in Photoshop.

In 2016, f/11 Magazine did a 25-page feature on my circumambulations series, still one of the biggest feature articles on my work to date.
