Acadia is one of the most photogenic places in the United States, and for good reason. There are mountains, streams, still lakes, colorful meadows, ocean views, woodlands, trails, misty valleys, brilliant sunrises and awe-inspring sunsets. And in the autumn, the color in Acadia is second to none. No wonder the area is consistently voted the best place to see fall foliage in the country.
Every time I’ve been out shooting in Acadia, I’m struck by the number of photographers I see, mostly amateur, some professional. Several times I’ve set up my camera and tripod in a quiet location, only to find that five minutes later, 15-20 people and sometimes even whole busloads of people, are standing around me shooting the same scene I am. People like to follow a person who looks like they know what they’re doing.
It’s my desire to begin running workshops, or more accurately, photography tours, in Acadia National Park, starting in October 2009. Unlike other photography workshops, the plan is to bring a small group of enthusiastic photographers together for a week of shooting and learning in an informal, friendly manner.
Each day, we’ll leave our hotel early for dawn pictures, shooting at places like Cadillac Mountain, where the North American continent sees the first light of day. Hopefully we’ll catch the low clouds rolling through the valleys in the dawn light. After a good breakfast back at the hotel, we’ll head out for the day to explore the island and see where the light and color lead us. Dinners will be in town at one of Bar Harbor’s many fine restaurants. After our meal, we’ll get together to review the day’s shots and talk photography together.
Acadia is a small national park, and I’ve been able to explore many locations throughout the park to determine where to be at the right time of the day. With an eye kept to the skies and the sun, we’ll make the most of each day, doing our best to be in the right place at the right time.
All levels of photographers are welcome, shooting either film and digital. I will be shooting with you, but also helping those who have questions about their cameras, and photography in general, helping you get the most out of your camera, new or old.
Think of it as a learning experience in the most beautiful classroom in the country.
If you’re interested in joining us, please email me, with no obligation, for details. The tour will take place from October 10-17, 2009. Cost is $1950 per person. Please contact us soon as registration will close shortly.
